Ariana Grace Croese

Signs of a God

The road bends

around the river.

I drive under the canopy

of telephone wires and

summer-green trees.

The memorial

on the side of the road

where the motorcyclist died.

I look for the sign

that used to say,

God answers prayers.

I haven’t seen it in a while.

Ariana Grace Croese is a poet based in the Hudson Valley. She majored in Italian and German Studies at Cornell University, where she was a Rawlings Cornell Presidential Research Scholar. She completed an honors thesis for her Italian major on "The Decameron" as well as one for her German studies major comparing "The Magic Mountain" and "The Tartar Steppe." Since graduating she has focused on writing poetry, and during the day, she works as a multilingual market research professional.
